The cycle route between Nowe Warpno and Rieth (Germany) will be available again to residents and tourists from 6 August this year. This is the result of a regulation published in the Journal of Laws of the Republic of Poland concerning changes related to border controls. Olgierd Geblewicz, Marshal of the West Pomeranian Province, appealed for the restoration of this route.

The reintroduction of border controls in July this year has made it very difficult to move freely around the region by bicycle. In view of this, Olgierd Geblewicz, Marshal of the West Pomeranian Province, requested the Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration to extend the list of open border crossings to include the Rieth – Nowe Warpno crossing, located on the cycle route around the Szczecin Lagoon. This is the second most popular cycle route in Western Pomerania. It is crossed by an estimated 20,000 people a year.

The request of Olgierd Geblewicz, Marshal of the West Pomeranian Province, has been approved, and from 6 August it will be possible to cross the border between Nowe Warpno and Rieth. Checks will be carried out 50 metres before the entrance to the bridge (at border sign no. 885).

"We are pleased with this decision because it will have a real impact on the comfort and safety of cyclists, but also on the tourism industry in Nowe Warpno and the surrounding area. Before the changes, getting to the nearest border crossing meant an additional 30 km of riding and the need to travel on roads without cycling infrastructure and without route markings," says Olgierd Geblewicz, Marshal of the West Pomeranian Province.

The Cycling Communication Office of the Marshal's Office of the West Pomeranian Province also encourages cyclists to use the Nowe Warpno – Altwarp sea border crossing, which is located on an alternative route around the Szczecin Lagoon. The connection is operated from Tuesday to Sunday by a German operator, Lutt Matten. Detailed information can be found in the ‘Pomorze Zachodnie’ app.

It is also worth noting that the pedestrian and bicycle crossing on the Velo Baltica route in Świnoujście has been extended to include a section of the beach. This means that people travelling on foot or, for example, on fat bikes can cross the border on the beach without any obstacles.

Border controls are currently reinstated until 4 October.
